Do not worry

Matthew 6:31: “So do not start worrying: ‘Where will my food come from? or my drink? or my clothes?’GNB

Worrying is a disease of the mind that we need to be cured from by renewing our minds (Romans 12:1) on the issue of the faithfulness of God. This was what Jesus was saying, using the example of the birds, and flower that experience sufficiency, all by depending on God (Matt 6:25-30). Jesus is saying don’t worry about food, drink and clothes; this means that if you have foods, clothes and water to drink, give thanks to God.

Jesus was saying God is capable of taking care of your physical necessities. Don’t allow your mind to be agitated, allow the peace of God to dominate your mind. But the only way that this will happen is if you have an understanding of God as father. Jesus kept telling his audience of their heavenly father (Matthew 5:15,45,48; 6:9, 4, 6, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 18, 26, 32; 7:11,21) which was obviously a fresh way of looking at God for the people at that time. It is who God is to you that forms the basis of faith. That is why Jesus said, have faith in God (Mark 11:22). If you do not see God as father but as some being who created the world and took a leave from it, you have signed a fellowship pact with the spirit of worry, if there is anything like that.

A father is responsible for provision. Though you hold a job that puts food on your table, still see it as the provision of your Father because that is what it is. Allow the words of Jesus to convince you that God is your father and not just any kind of father, our Heavenly Father. And as heaven is above the earth, he is not limited by the confines of nature; therefore your provision is sure.

The examples of the bird and the flower are also apt. Both of them do not do anything to be beautifully adorned or to have food to eat. God takes care of them. Let that same attitude of dependence be in you. Be like a child in dependence on the Father, and it is by that we see the kingdom of God expressed in our life (Matthew 18:3).

No one is advocating that you do nothing. Far from it! But that verse brings out a strong contrast because the flower and bird who do nothing have something, and they only have the relationship of creator-created with God, but you have a father-child relationship with him, giving you less excuse for worrying.

God cares for you as a father, get that into your head and stop throwing tantrums but lean on God. You will see that by doing that you allow God to be for you who he his, your heavenly father.

Question: what causes you to worry most?

Prayer: Open my eyes Lord to see you as Father
