The Lord is your inheritance

Jewish high priest wearing a hoshen, and Levit...

Joshua 13:33: But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the LORD God of Israel is their inheritance, just as he said to them.

The phrase, “The Lord is your inheritance” has only to do with a particular tribe in Israel, the tribe of Levi. They were scattered across the land of Israel with no portion of land they can call there’s, because “the Lord was their inheritance”. Their inheritance was not visible, physical or tangible, their inheritance was the Lord. Therefore all the offering of the children of Israel to God would be appropriated by the Levites, with a more special group among them called Priests, the direct descendants of Aaron the first High Priest. They are to be devoted to attending to the needs of the Temple. They took care of God’s house and God took care of them. They are also in charge of instructing the people of Israel in the word of God (Deuteronomy 24:8, 2Chronicles 15:3).

Now, the era of sacrifices and a sacred temple is over (for relationship with God) with the sacrifice of Jesus which led to the veil of the temple being torn up from top to bottom. God tore up the previous covenant based on the blood of goats and bulls, to establish a new one based on the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 8:6-13, 12:24).

Before, there was a tribe directly in charge of the affairs of a physical temple, but that era of material temple of God has passed, and we all as Christians, are the temple of God (1Corinthians 3:16). The old order of “the Levites and the rest of the people” is done away with. Yes it was a pretty elaborate arrangement, but it could not deliver what God wanted: to do away with the issue of sin in the consciousness of the people (Hebrews 10:1-4, 10-14).

We are now called a Royal Priesthood (1Peter 2:9); every one is a priest for God. All that hierarchical structure in dealing with God has been done away with. The Lord as inheritance is therefore not the exclusive preserve of a group of people, but all Christians have direct access to God to offer the sacrifices of praise, draw near him in prayer, without fear, because there is no prejudice in God. That was what He wanted from the onset: a nation where everyone was a priest (Exodus 19:5-6).

There is no division in the kingdom, no segregation; all are individually children of God since we all by choice accepted Jesus and thereafter assumed a one on one relationship with him (John 1:12). He is our inheritance and by implication, eternal life is our inheritance since He has it to give (John 17:2), the fullness of the Holy Spirit is our inheritance since he has it and has given it (Luke 3:16, John 3:34-36), and coming to the knowledge of truth is our inheritance since He is truth (John 14:6).

The Lord is our inheritance. Our inheritance is all the blessings in the heavenly realms since that is where his throne is (Ephesians 1:3). There is nothing more valuable than your relationship with God because it has eternal life embedded in it.

The Lord is your possession, greater than any physical property; He is the intangible who makes the tangible possible. Everything whose foundation is not in God would soon be done away with (Hebrews 12:24-29): therefore if all you have are what can be seen, what a loss that will be, but relationship with God delivers what cannot be destroyed into your hands, the spiritual intangibles.

The other tribes in Israel had their identity tied to a physical portion of land but the identity of the Levites is tied to the temple of the Lord, the house of the Lord. In the same vein, your identity is tied to the church, above and beyond any other thing you are associated with. You should seek the highest good of the church all of your life. Your destiny is tied to it because it offers the expression of Christ, your possession, on the earth for this age (Ephesians 1:22-23, 3,10-11).

“The Lord is your inheritance” means you are among a special class of people whose primary possession is spiritual, in the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of (Eternal) Life (Romans 8:2) and the Spirit of Truth (that was what Jesus shed on us after he ascended on high [Acts 2:33]). The Holy Spirit brings you into all truth, and that truth makes you a different kind of person when interacting with the physical world, which is also your inheritance (Matthew 5:5) because the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof (Psalm 24:1).

Prophecy: Don’t be blind to the fact that you are a special person, you are my house for now and eternity. Every other thing fades away, but since I am your possession, you will be relevant forever.
