Yielding to God’s will in our lives

Do you know what the will of God in your life is? That is a spiritual prerequisite of a walk with God. Paul said we need to understand what the will of God is (Ephesians 5:17). In another place he said we should make our bodies living sacrifice and also renew our mind to be able to accurately judge the perfect will of God (Romans 12:1-2).

The perfect life is lived according to the will of God. The psalmist prayed that words of his mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to the Lord (Psalm 19:14). Both the words of our mouth and the thoughts of our hearts are our daily activity (constantly marking our lives), they may seem innocuous but the will of God wants to penetrate to those areas of our life, the will (word) of God should be brought  to bear on our spirit and our soul (Hebrews 4:12).


There is a will of God for your thoughts. Don’t make the mistake that God is only focused on appearances; far from it. Prophet Samuel had to learn that. He was close to making a mistake in his choice of the King for Israel, from the sons of Jesse (1Samuel 16:1-7).

God had to tell him that He looks beyond appearance, and at the heart. If the will of God is not done in your thought processes (a component of the heart) it cannot be done in your life, because the way the thought goes the life goes also.

That is why it is the will of God that we meditate on his word (engaging his thoughts). The psalmist (David) says if a man would not walk in the way of the sinners, or seat with scoffers, his delights must be in the word of the Lord and he must meditate on it day and night. David called such a man blessed, who does the will of God in his thoughts (Psalm 1).

Paul said that his battle ground is in the thoughts of the people to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, pulling down strongholds in opposition to the word of God (2Corinthians 10:4-7), because a sanitised thought life is a sanitised life.


There is the will of God needed in the words that we speak. When we speak words of doubt and not of faith, our words are not in alignment with the will of God. And Paul described the word that he preaches as the word of faith (Romans 10:8).

We are told to have the faith of God and speak to mountains to move and that they would hear us (Mark 11:22-24).  God wants us to speak words of faith.

While with the disciples on a boat, Jesus was deeply asleep while a strong wave arose on the sea, they all panicked and complained that Jesus does not care for them, sleeping as he was, while they were in mortal danger (Matthew 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41).

Jesus woke up and rebuked the wind and also rebuked them for being of little faith, shown in their choice of words.

God has a problem with the faithless, and faithlessness is always shown in the words that we speak. He called certain people a faithless generation (Matthew 17:14-20). A generation full of negative thought producing little results.

The bible says that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). You can’t be full of faith if your thoughts processes are not permeated with the word of God, which is the representation of the thoughts of God, which are for good and not for evil.


Yielding to God means letting go of your own will, to embrace His will. But the will of God does not necessarily fall on your laps; you have to seek it out. The bible says it is the prestige of God to conceal a matter; and it is the prestige of kings (and you are one [Revelation 1:6]) to search out a matter (Proverbs 25:2).

You need to find out what the will of God is for your life because ignorance is no excuse. It is the premium that you put to knowing the will of God that will determine your level of commitment to finding it out.

David is an example in this. God would not just come to him and tell him stuffs concerning how to execute a battle strategy or in making a political move. He usually asks God for direction, because the bible says ask and it shall be given unto you, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened to you (Matthew 7:7-8). You have to do something to get direction. Do you part which is asking, seeking and knocking.

Set apart some time; take a break from the hustle and bustle of life to hear from God. You need to lay down your preconceived notions at the feet of the cross, as you are called to die daily to your own will (Luke 9:23), taking up your cross and following Jesus. You are called to follow Christ, called to yield to his will, because to be full of self will, God frowns at.

Remember Adam, who rejected the will of God to follow his own will, to achieve his own agenda, making nonsense of the agenda of God for his life, leading to a life of pain and regrets?

The temptation of the devil that Jesus Christ faced was an examination of his readiness to yield to the will of God (Luke 4:1-15). It may not be too farfetched to say that all the temptation you have faced was to measure your level of yielding to God.

Satan asked Jesus to turn stone into bread, but the will of God was that man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

The devil wanted Jesus to fall down and worship him, to receive the kingdoms of this world, but the will of God says that it is better to worship God that to take over the whole world.

The devil asked Jesus to jump down from a high place to test if the word of God is true, but the will of God says we are not to test God, but we are to submit to him.

In all these, what Satan wanted to stroke in Jesus, (to find out if it’s in him) was self-will, at the end of the interaction, if was discovered that there was no self will to speak of in Jesus. I am not saying that Jesus does not have an opinion. In the experience in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46), just before he was arrested to be crucified, he expressed his opinion wanting the cup of the punishment to be taken away from him. But eventually what was in him or was not in him was shown: he had no self-will in opposition to the will of God; he has no agenda he wants to pursue apart from the agenda of God. He has no purpose that he wants to accomplish except the purpose of God.
