A priest with Urim and Thummim

The Urim and Thummim are like spiritual indicators of the will of God. When there is doubt of what the will of God is, the Urim and Thummim show the way (Exodus 28:30, Leviticus 8:8).

A priest with the Urim and Thummim will give the true word. But it seems that the physical Urim and Thummim is now lost to antiquity, never found.

Also when the true spiritual Urim and Thummim, personified by Jesus, comes on the scene, then there is no need for the physical one any longer.

Jesus is the real indicator of the will of God. Philip asked Him to show the disciples God the Father. Jesus was aghast, saying, “all these while that you have been with me, should you still ask for the Father to be shown to you, since I am in the Father is in me and I in the Father? It is sad that you did not recognise that?”

The Urim and the Thummim stands for God’s judgment: and Jesus said that the Father has left all judgment to his Son (John 5:19-30), so that everyone would honour the Son the way they honour the Father. Jesus is the total representation of the thought and the will for God. When coming to the earth, he said he has come to do the will of God (Hebrews 10;5-10).

In his totality, Jesus is called the Word of God, the final diagnosis of the divine intention. In his coming as a human being, John said that He is the word becoming flesh and dwelling among us, full of grace and truth (John 1:11-18); and truth is another meaning of the Urim and Thummim.

When you want to find out the truth, the Urim and Thummim comes in handy.

Jesus described himself as the way, the truth and the life (John 10:10); he represents the accurate will of God and the accurate way of God.

He is also light (John 9:5, 1:1-5), which is another meaning of the Urim and Thummim. As the light, he shows us the way, helps us to avoid traps. As the light, he illuminates our life. We can come to the truth about ourselves, that we are lost in darkness without him.

Nicodemus came to Jesus, who told him that except a man is born again, he cannot enter the kingdom of God (John 3:1-21).

Among other things, he told Nicodemus that he needed to believe him as the custodian of absolute truth. Jesus Christ came from heaven and qualifies to tell Nicodemus the truth because no one else has been to heaven to qualify as representing the full word and will of God, but himself the Son of man (Jesus) who is from heaven. When he says except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God, he tied a new birth to any meaningful experience of the presence of God. A spiritual rebirth is the entry qualification for the kingdom of God. And that is the Urim and Thummim talking, that is the final bus stop of truth that cannot be negotiated.

Through Jesus, you have the truth about yourself. Several people can have their opinion, but in your life it is the counsel of the Lord which will stand (Proverbs 19:21, Isaiah 46:10).

How does one know the counsel of the Lord? It is through Jesus who has the Urim and Thummim, who has the full complement of the Spirit of God. And that includes the Spirit of counsel (Isaiah 11:1-5); the counsel of the Lord for your life is located in Jesus.

As the Urim and Thummim, Jesus can shine light on the future. The disciples came to him concerning signs of the end times and Jesus told them the specifics (Matthew 24). He shone light on what to expect, warning that they should not be deceived because false prophets are going arise.

Jesus at the outset of the ministry, was regarded as light shining in the darkness, he is the great light (Matthew 4:16).

The sin of Adam plunged the world into spiritual darkness but Jesus as the bright and morning star (Revelation 22:16), represents the way to go. You can’t go wrong with Jesus. He is the light.

Under the Old Testament, it is usually the high priest that has the Urim and Thummim. And Jesus is the high priest now.

He is the authorised High Priest (Hebrews 7:21-28), through whom we have access to the truth and the life of God. He made it possible through his sacrifice for us to draw near to God, to have access to the holy of holies (Hebrews 4:14-16). We now have access to the best of God, to the glory of God (Romans 5:1-2), to his presence, to his true knowledge, to forgiveness, to eternal life, to justification, to wisdom, to power, to righteousness.

By his sacrifice he created a way by faith though which we can experience the glory of God, through which we can be realigned without maker. We become candidates of mercy; we have a place reserved for us in heaven. We have a positive reversal of fortune; we are counted as part of the beloved of God.

The Urim and Thummim is an indicator of what is true.

Many choose to believe that their branch of “knowledge” is the truth. They claim to be on the path that leads to God. They claim we individually are “gods”, so the part of knowing God is: knowing ourselves, that God is mere essence.

But the bible has already declared as cursed, anyone who promulgates any other gospel apart from the one that affirms that God came in the flesh as Jesus, died for our sins and was raised up for our justification and anyone that does not acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus (Romans 10:9-13, 1Timothy 3:16), above all, cannot be saved.

It’s like in the Old Testament set up in the temple, where the high priest goes before God on behalf of the nation. If you declare that the one high priest chosen by God is not the one for you, does not represent you , then you are on your own, you are on the way that is no way.

Jeroboam decided to set up a priesthood based on his own preferences, and he came under the judgment of God (1Kings 12:26-33, 13:33-34). You need to recognise the one God has recognised as the High Priest, and not be self-opinionated in such a critical matter as your eternal destination.

You will be in error, when you have a self-made programme of salvation for yourself, or buy into other man-made ideas of salvation, because somehow you find the Christian claim that everybody-not-believing-in-Jesus-will-go-to-hell offensive. But the truth is that as many as receive Jesus is given the right to become sons of God (John 1:12).
