How to pray all-night, all by yourself

urlLuke 6:12: And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all-night in prayer to God.

Jesus is our example. If he prays all-night sometimes, we should too. It however takes a high level of cooperation between your spirit soul and body to get the job done. You don’t want the words of Jesus: “the spirit is wiling but the flesh is weak” to refer to you (Matthew 26:41).

Are you ready for this high involvement of your spirit, because that is what an all-night of prayer means? I don’t know how to teach you to pray all-night without you being equipped already with the spiritual component called speaking in tongues.

Your laptop is equipped to run a lot of software but will only run the ones installed. You need to have installed in you the speaking in tongues component (I am assuming you are born again and already have the Holy Spirit as a seal [Ephesians 1:13]), through correct understanding in that regard, and faith action.

If you have read and believed all manner of negative stuffs that made you to be against speaking in tongues, the devil has you were he wants and this piece will not really benefit you.

Speaking in tongues is not demonic, though it can be if you asked the devil for his spirit. But if you ask God for the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ said that it is like a child asking the father for fish (Luke 11:1-13). The father would not give the child scorpion, which is a symbol of demons. Jesus Christ says we would be trample upon snakes and scorpions through his authority (Luke 10:18-19).

So free your mind from such objections. Once you ask for the Holy Spirit, believe you have received him, right there and then. Why? Because the Holy Spirit has been poured out already from heaven (Acts 2:1-4); on asking to receive the Holy Spirit, believe you receive the utterance of speaking in unknown tongues, and open your mouth in faith, speaking those words out, those unlearn, beyond natural understanding words/syllables. That becomes the token of faith on your end, activating a new experience of the Holy Spirit in your life called the baptism in the Spirit.

Perish the thought that God only gives certain people, the “gift” of speaking in tongues. Reading Acts chapter 19:1-12, does not give the impression that speaking in tongues is for a selective few, and it shows that the immediate evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues.

And the baptism of the Holy Spirit is an event, not a process, which follows the experience of salvation, since Paul asked the twelve disciples who received the Holy Spirit through his ministry in Acts 19, if they have received the Holy Spirit, since they believed?

Speaking in tongues makes praying all-night cheap because the burden of looking for what to say, for hours on end, it done away with. Read 1Corinthians 14: 2, 4, 14-15, 18, Jude 1:20 and Ephesians 6:18, to understand that speaking in tongues all-night saying syllables that seems to sound alike is more than it looks.

Once we have settled the issue of the necessity of being activated in the verbalisation of unknown tongues then we come to the area soul. At least the soul has three components: the mind, will and emotions.

With the mind, you need to have the full grasp of the advantages that will accrue from an all-night event of personal prayer; if you are somebody who thinks that the length of time spent in the prayer is not important, just the quality, it means that you are not ready for an all-night of personal prayer. Can your prayer have more quality that Jesus’? He however entered into the all-night prayer thingy.

In the mind, you must fully realise that an extended time of prayer, is not because you have a special need but because you are in love with Jesus, and would want to be with him in prayer. Period! Any other kind of motivation will not do, on the long run. An all-night of prayer should be because you want to have an extended time of fellowship with the Holy Spirit, and that as you speak in tongues in that time, you will be spiritually built-up, just as Paul and Jude declared.

What about your will? There are things competing for our attention. You know that it is possible to be before the television all-night being entertained, so why not being before God in prayer all-night? Sometime it boils down to your choice. You can attest to the fact that if you want to do something, you will, even if it is to stay up all-night. Have you ever stayed up all-night due to an emergency situation? You should see prayer as an emergency.

Peter wrote that we need to programme our mind for effectiveness in prayer (1Peter 4:7). Set out on it with all the will power, giving it all the seriousness it demands because of the times we are in. Jude warned that to not fall into the prevailing error of the times, we must build up ourselves on our most holy faith praying in the Holy Spirit.

What if in the course of praying all-night, after only two hours, you fall asleep? Don’t let that bother you; it is the training of your will in process. Rome was not built in a day. But it won’t be built at all, without some tenacity.

Your will was used to sleeping all-night, now you should train it to pray all-night. Body does not have a choice but to follow your will. It may act up, like the case of sleeping off after two hours, but eventually it will break, like a wild horse.

That is why the first thing after the tool of speaking in tongues is ready is to be thoroughly convinced of praying all-night. You can only embark on the journey with total conviction, which is what your “will” would feed on the journey. Conviction is the food of the will.

Note that I never said praying all-night has any spiritual significance. Jesus never said so. At night, everyone who have been disturbing him all day seeking for his attention had succumbed to nature, are all asleep. He uses that opportunity to pray to God, for a personal time between him and his father.

Don’t let anyone becloud your mind concerning certain Jewish practices of observances of hours in prayer. What you need to draw near to God is faith (Hebrews 11:6), not a special place or time, which was what Jesus told the Samaritan woman he met at a well (John 4:19-24).

In an all-night of payer you need to have the joy of the Holy Spirit bubbling in you, making you excited about the time you are spending in the presence of God. The bible says that in the presence of God there is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11). You are joyful because you know your spirit is engaging with the Holy Spirit and your life will never remain the same.

You may ask, “what if I am tired, how ‘am I going to pray all-night long?” Tiredness is irrelevant; it is conviction beyond a shadow of doubt. Your body will surprise you at what it can handle, once you take up your role as its driver, once you know what you are doing, and are focused.

Paul said: I put my body under (1Corinthians 9:27), meaning, “I cause it to do what I want it to.” Come to think of it, Jesus ministered, talked to people all day, and sometimes prayed all-night afterward. He was a very busy man, in the day, which was why he prayed all-night, for some, being very busy is the reason they can’t pray all-night. It’s all about priority. And Jesus admonished us: men ought always to pray and not to faint (Luke 18:1).

    1. In the article I said that it is because of the extended time it will afford most people to be in the presence of God. But if you usually work all night, then you can change the word all-night to all-day of prayer.

Or do you feel there are other benefits?

    1. Ayo, its like you did not get my point. It is you who thinks you are tired. Let’s say there is a sort of emergency, won’t you stay awake all night? Hunger for God puts a spiritual emergency in you. You complain that you need sleep because you are not hungry enough. I suspect that you are underestimating your body. Put a demand of all night prayer on it and see what will happen. If at first you don’t succeed, you can try again. At worst, you will learn to pray a few hours.

I hope you are not worshiping rest, but God. You can forgo rest to seek God, if you want to.

I am not saying you should pray all night, all week, all year round. But an all night of prayer once a month will not kill you.

  1. You said, “…speaking in tongues all-night saying syllables that seems to sound alike is more than it looks.” That is what has concerned me about speaking in tongues. It seems that the words I say are limited to probably fewer than 50 or 100 or even less maybe. My mind has had a hard time accepting that that is the Holy Spirit praying for all the things that might be on God’s heart.

    1. How many letters do you have in the alphabet? 26. Maybe the words you are saying are syllables which are like the alphabets of the Spirit.

I said all that because, you obviously have a very logical mind. But note that the foolishness of God is wiser than man. Because the words sound foolish to your mind is a sign that they are from the Holy Spirit. Paul said when he speaks in tongues, his understanding cannot be wrapped around it. Speaking in tongues is by faith. Don’t pay too much attention to how you sound. Let yourself go. You’ll find out that the Holy Spirit has more “words” to say.

Have you tried singing in tongues? It is nice.

  2. I was glad to see your addition in your replies because your article gives the impression that you do not think the body ever needs rest.. I agree with you that we often do not expect it to perform as well as it can, and that it does not hurt to spend time with our heavenly Father doing what He says via Paul that He would that we do more of than we might otherwise do.I Co 14:5, but we must be involved in a group that allows individuals to prophesy as a manifestation in order to do what He would rather we do than just speaking in tongues. Learning to let God give us the utterance is so important to our being ready to speak forth a word of Prophesy in a gathering of the Church. We are usually raised to depend so heavily on our understanding that giving God a chance to operate in our lives in a way that bypasses our understanding is quite novel at first, but so rewarding in the long run. Words fail us to communicate the experience well. Because it is not turning ourselves over to an external force to possess us and make us do or say what we would not, for we never lose the ability to start or stop the operation of the manifestation but it is giving permission to speak as inspired not as we think up before hand or study and learn that week. That is not to discourage us to study and learn but it is another avenue to learn how much God wants to be involved in our lives. Too many well meaning Church groups still discourage Speaking in Tongues in the first place, but it the only way I know for believers to be sure they are allowing God to inspire them. You and you alone know whether or not you are allowing God to give or supply the utterance or if you are planning in advance the utterance your self. Setting out to speak in tongues for hours, as in an all night session certainly gets you out of that, for who could plan that much speech in a language they do not understand. So bravo! well said but I might edit my article to note you are not expecting people to go without sleep every night, It does not say that Jesus never slept so we should not expect to never sleep as well. Sleep may be over rated by some but it is required and a part of being mortal. The first time you do speak in tongues all night, you will no doubt be surprised at how well you do the next day but as the word says we are to let moderation be a trade mark of our Christian lives. Pp 4:5. Selah.

  3. Its so awesome to get this site on the first try.. Exactly what i need to read/hear.. When you pray all nite in the spirit do you mix it up between tongues and english (i presume)? Or just tongues?

    1. Th prying is a coversation with God there is nothing in the word that says it is one sided but most are not trained to listen for God’s voice in reply I address tongues and praying with our understanding also in my blog although I am in the midst of an article on prayer with our understanding it will be out within the next 2 days

      1. Ok.. So when I quiet down and try to listen, most of the time my mind runs off.. I have heard the voice of the lord before but its like I don’t know how to get back to that place..

      2. TJ, don’t focus on hearing from God, assume that since he wants to communicate to you, He will find a way to do so. He is your father and is in you by his Holy Spirit. Your primary focus is to fellowship with him, that is the way to hearing from him. I hope you are not talking about hearing an audible voice because that is not the commonest way God speaks. He speaks by the witness of the Holy Spirit in your heart, through your normal thought process highlighted by the Holy Spirit. I repeat: you primary focus should be fellowship through prayer, through reading the bible and fasting sometimes, to sharpen your spiritual edge, helping you to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit all the time.

  4. Hi, very nice article; i do the all night prayers ever so often, but i break it down with meditation in the word and hymnals as well. I like the fact that you spent so much time on speaking in tongues as being relevant for the journey of tarrying (all night prayer). The great part about this is when you feel as giving up, the Holy Spirit engages you further to get what you sought HIm for and it can go into another dimension.

Thanks for dealing with this on the start of the year.

  5. Reblogged this on Disciples of hope and commented:
Praying is central to Christian living as much as believing. Since the grace of God is available at all times of the day, it’s helpful to know that if you feel like getting up in the middle of the night and pray for something, you can most certainly pray at that time. You may not be able to pray all night every time but there are those moments in life when you know that you know that you must pray at night. Once you know that you need to pray on a certain nigh, then just understand how to pray at night and proceed for the glory of God.

      1. I like you post. I also want to add that many people don’t understand that speaking in tongues is a subsequent experience to receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost. I wasn’t until I focused more on receiving the Holy Ghost as opposed to trying to hear how the tongues sound that the Lord filed me 27 years ago with His Spirit.

    1. Sorry that I am responding this late. Speaking in tongues is a direct activity of your spirit. However, I believe that the holy of holies is where we are as children of God, whether speaking in tongues or not. The bible says that we are sitted in the heavenly places with Jesus, in the right hand of the father. That is clear enough. But there are verifiable benefits of speaking in tongues that we cannot deny. see 1Corinthians 14:2,4.

  6. I came across this article because I was looking to find someone else who had found the power of praying in tongues all night. And I can attest to the power. About 7 years ago, while unemployed and single, I had the opportunity to pray for hours during the day. I would take long drives on the back roads near my town and drive very slow, praying in tongues for most of it. I did this for 3 months strait after looking for a job in the mornings. Most days I prayed for around 6 hours, but some were 4 hours and others 8. During that time, all parts of my life was transformed. I had the clearest thinking I have ever had. I got the best job I had ever had, making 3x what I had ever made. I had a joy and peace that was truly supernatural. Nothing bothered me, nothing annoyed me. I was able, without even trying, to never gossip or worry or judge people. One night, I went out with my girlfriends from grade school. They were all drinking and I was the designated driver. But, I had so much fun! I actually felt buzzed the entire night. And when I got in the car to drive, I was alert and clear, yet still happy and playful as if I had drank along with them. I know it sounds unreal, but I am telling you the truth. It was truly amazing. Also, my body just started working as it should. I had suffered pms, acne and migraines on a weekly basis since adolescence. I also always carried an extra 15-20lbs. I lost all the weight and my body toned up without ANY exercise or diet. I was totally Hot! (In a good way) In fact, my diet was worse than normal, because I was on a limited income. I also had absolutely no pms with perfect 28 day cycles, my acne cleared up and my migraines completely vanished. Toward the end of the three months of doing this, I also met my husband. We were married within 9 months. When I got my amazing job, however, I no longer had a bunch of free time to spend praying, so I stopped doing it. I did not notice the affects of not praying (or praying much less) for over a year. By that time I was married, and had a new baby. I quickly realized the source of my joy and fulfilled life was that intense time of prayer. So I began trying to fit prayer time into my schedule, but it just wasn’t working. I would only have a few minutes before the demands of my life pulled me away. I actually came to resent my husband and child, even though I know that they are wonderful gifts from the lord, that were birthed out of those hours of time in his presence. After nearly six years of asking God for the time to pray, he gave me the idea to pray at night, instead of sleeping. My first thought was, “duh, why didn’t I think of that?” But, the truth was, he gave me the idea years before and I disregarded it. (I was a sleep deprived newlywed and new mother who trusted in sleep more than God). But, this time, I had grown in my faith. I knew, from the miracle changes I had experienced before, that losing sleep would not affect me. Why? Because in HIM we live and move and have our being. Because HE is life! Because He is our strength. Because He lifts us up. Because He exalts us. He is the creator of ALL things. That would include the restoration of my brain and body. I decided to trust him with those things. I had faith that being in his presence during the night hours would be more restorative to my physical body than natural sleep. And you know what! It absolutely has been. I spent 2-3 hours in prayer, per night the first week and that quickly has grown to all nighters. I stay alert by driving. I drive those same back roads, which are empty, besides some wildlife, and drive 26 miles per hour on cruise control (that’s the lowest my car will drive on cc). I am only starting my third week and I don’t do all nighters every night, yet. I trust it to grow into that, though. But I am already watching my life transform, again. The first thing I noticed was the melting away of worry and fear, as well as no longer resenting my daughter or husband. I am confident that in a very short time, I will see miracles as amazing as those I experienced 7 years ago. It’s exciting and fun and I crave my fellowship with him! Oh, yeah. And I feel FAR MORE rested after the nights I spend MORE time with him. My all nighters are more restorative than my 2 or 3 or 4 hour nights. I truly believe that a person could grow to a place where they did not have to sleep, which is something I am seeking. Jesus said, “if we would lose our life for his sake, we would find it.” I believe that is what is happening. I am losing my “source of life”, my sleep and I am finding it, IN HIM!
