Light, life and love in the Word

Deuteronomy 4:6: Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’

To the limit that our lives patterns the word of God, that is the limit of the positive enduring results we see.

Because everything will be shaken and it is what is founded in God, in his word that will stand. This is a call to review our lives and see the basis of what we do, our relationships, our action, our activities, our involvements. Are they founded on the word of God on the will of God or on something else?

Everything originally emerges from the word of God, and everything else in our lives founded on the world will endure as God’s word is.  The word of God was recommended by Paul as the building block of our lives. The word of God is infused with the light, life and love of God.

To be in darkness is the worst thing than happen to you. That means you don’t know where to go, what to do or who you are. It is confusion without limit; it is falling into the pit and not knowing how to get out of it; it is following those who are blind and not realising that they are blind, repeating their mistakes, falling into the same pit with them (Matthew 15:14). It is making the wrong decisions, one after the other and tying up yourself into a vicious cycle of defeat.

However, the word of God is the light unto our feet and a lamp unto our path (Psalm 119:105). It brings illumination. We also read in the bible: ponder the path of your feet and let all your ways be established (if I may add) on the word of God (Proverbs 4:26). Therefore when you find yourself vacillating between different opinions, not sure of which direction to go, it means you should embrace more of the light of God via his word.

It is interesting that the light you need today is different from what you will need tomorrow. Note that the light that you can see outside your window coming from the sun, left the sun eight minutes ago, and the one you will need tomorrow is yet to be released. And if it is not released the whole earth is doomed. That is why what you need is to be in consistent touch with Sun of righteousness- Jesus (Malachi 4:2-3), who also doubles as the Word (John 1:1-5).

The moon has light because of its relationship to the sun, its position to it.  Otherwise, the moon will be useless for those of us who are on earth in its function of shining light. In the same manner, it is the light that you have received because you are rightly related to Jesus that determines your usefulness in God’s accounting of usefulness. If you are not rightly related to the sun, to Jesus, then your purpose is no purpose at all.

In the Word we have life, which is why Jesus said that man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). The bible says that the dead will hear the word of God and those who hear will live, because the word has life quality (John 5:25).

Jesus said: the words that I speak to you are Spirit and life (John 6:63). When we recognise that our life depends on the word of God then we would take it (the word) very seriously. That is why it was a dire situation in the time of Eli when it was reported that the word of God was scarce and there was no open vision (1Samuel 3:1-2, 19-21).

And when God revealed himself to Samuel around that time, it was, as recorded, by the word of the Lord. And in the time of Jesus, He was known as the teacher, as the Rabbi, that was his foremost identity. Even though He healed the sick, raised the dead, cleansed lepers, but far more spectrum of people were affected by his instructional, teaching dimension that his other aspects.

People said that he taught as one with authority and not as one of the scribes (Matthew 7:28-29). That was because he appealed to his own authority as the word the ultimate and not to the authority of Moses, putting him in conflict with those who saw Moses as the be all and end all of revelation of God to man.

Jesus is the ultimate revelation. On a mount where Jesus took Peter, James and John, Elijah (the revered prophet) and Moses (the revered law-giver) appeared, both key people in the history of Israel, but the voice of God sounded from heaven in the hearing of the three disciples of Jesus, that: this is my beloved Son, hear him (talking about Jesus) (Matthew 17:1-8).

The love of God is communicated by his word. When the word comes to a group of people it is a message of love. Even the message of judgment is love coated. When Jonah was sent with a message of judgment to the nation of Nineveh, and the whole nation repented because of that, God changed his mind, because He’ll rather show mercy than judge.

If we have the right attitude to the word of judgment it becomes grace for us, we would realise that that word is mercy in action, love in motion. The love of God as He expresses by his word in warning helps to brings us to repentance.

Peter wrote that the long-suffering of God is waiting even now as it did in the time of Noah, because God is not willing that any should perish but that all would come to repentance. The preaching of the gospel is an expression of the love of God to humanity, to bring us to repentance (2Peter 3:9-15, 1Peter 3:20).

Love does not only call us away from the wrong path, but it also calls us to come up higher, to go deeper in God and to be more immersed in him, become one with him. That is the best for us, and God seeks the best.
