Exodus 13:14: And it shall be when your sons asks you in time to come, saying, What is this? you shall say to him, Jehovah brought us out of Egypt by the strength of His hand, from the house of bondage.
The message of the gospel, mirrored by the experience of the deliverance of the children of Israel from Egypt, the house of bondage, shows it is a liberation message.
When Jesus Christ was talking about the kinds of anointing that was upon him (Luke 4:18-21) he mentioned healing, deliverance and liberation. And when Peter was relating to a novice gentile about Jesus, he said Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit and power and went about doing good and healing those that are oppressed of the devil (Acts 10:38).
Where before we were in bondage to Satan as unbelievers, our reality now is that we have authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the powers of the enemy (Luke 10:19).
In the ministry of Paul we see the manifestation of the power of God that shows that the gospel is not in word only but in the demonstration of the spirit and power (1Corinthians 2:4-5, 1Thessalonians 1:5). In one of the first outings of Paul with Barnabas (Acts 13:5-12), he confronted a person attempting to resist the effect of the gospel on a ruler of that place. Paul declared God’s judgement on him wherewith he was blind for a season. He wanted to perpetuate spiritual blindness in another person against the truth of the gospel; instead, he was the person who became physically blind. That was God’s power manifest in the midst of the heathen.
In another place, Paul confronted a girl who had the spirit of divination (Acts 16:16-18), which gives the satanic ability to reveal erstwhile undisclosed information and facts concerning a person. She has been a source of monetary gain for her master. Paul commanded that spirit of divination to come out of the girl and it did.
To “play” with such satanic medium is to open yourself to demonic infestation. That is merely a bait to get you to house some evil spirits which ultimately has nothing to offer but torment, more bondage, though not packaged as such (Ephesians 5:11), unless you repent and receive freedom from the house of bondage from Jesus who is alive today in the fullness of his power (Hebrews 13:8), though you cannot see him.
It takes the manifestation of power to effect deliverance from the house of bondage, from that satanic organisation. From the focus verse we have the phrase: “by the strength of his hand,” showing that God actually exerted himself to rescue the children of Israel, it wasn’t a passive affair at all.
Jesus healed a woman who has been bent over for eighteen years (Luke 13:11-17), but when the religious establishment raised an eyebrow that the healing took place on the Sabbath day, Jesus said the woman qualified to be loosed from being bound by Satan because she is a daughter of Abraham without being in further bondage to protocol.
During the three and a half years of the ministry of Jesus, there was an avalanche of miracles, several of it having to do with setting people free from demonic oppression, people were set free from all forms of spiritual bondage. They got their freedom from their individual houses of bondage.
There was a woman who suffered from severe bleeding for twelve years (Luke 8:43-48)? She was in bondage, so to speak, to medical practitioners who could not give her solution to her problem, which has literally taken over her life.
After meeting Jesus, the embodiment of freedom from bondage, (who said he has come to declare the acceptable year of the Lord, to declare jubilee, to declare freedom from enslavers, both physical and spiritual, shining his divine light, vanquishing the darkness that covers people up) she got her freedom from such physical oppression.
A man brought his son to Jesus who has a deaf and dumb devil (Mark 9:14-27). Jesus Christ cast out the deaf and dumb spirit and the child became well. The impact of that on that family is not quantifiable.
The boy had a demon, an evil personage influencing him, making him suicidal, at intervals causing him to jump into fire and water. The disciples had earlier attended to him but to no avail. Eventually Jesus healed the boy, setting him free, and He put the disciples’ inability to heal him to their lack of faith.
Faith is the key and lack of it effectively shuts out the glory of God from manifesting in a specific situation (John 11:40). Even when Jesus Christ was at his home town, he was hindered by faithlessness, from being all he could be, freeing the people from the bondage of sicknesses and all other types of oppression (Mark 6:1-6).
And that was the pit the children of Israel fell into: pit of unbelief (Hebrew 3:7-19, 1Corinthians 10:4). After they were taken from Egypt they still perished in the wilderness. This is similar to the analogy that Jesus Christ gave. He said when a demon is cast out from a man, it roams about in dry places and not finding a resting place decides to return to where he left, and finding it sparkling clean, goes and get more of its kind, making the latter end of the individual worse than former (Luke 11:24-26).
The problem with that kind of person whose later state is worse even though he was once delivered from bondage was because of lack of application of himself. If you have been emptied of evil spirits, you need to be filled with the goodly Spirit, the Holy Spirit. There can be no allowance for a vacuum. The children of Israel, after being freed from bondage to the Egyptians needed to now have an attachment to their deliverer in faith, devotion, commitment and development; failure to do that means their bones would be scattered across the wilderness. They were free, but eventually perished in no man’s land making their end, in a way, worse than their beginning. They succumbed to the weight of God’s rejection in the wilderness; at least in Egypt they would have burial grounds!
Mary Magdalene was a woman who had seven devils cast out of her (Luke 8:1-4), but afterwards she didn’t relax, throwing a party, acting as if she can now run her life by herself. She attached herself to the Lord Jesus Christ, (who cast out the devils) both in moral and financial support to His ministry. She became part of his travelling company so that she can be close to the word of God, which she needed to fill her, where before she was filled with evil spirits, where before she was in bondage. She sought to have her root deeper in the one who freed her.
For her, it was all about exchanging “bondages”; she was detached from demonic influences to become attached to the Lord’s influence. That was the error of the Israelites in the wilderness. They had been detached from the house of bondage but they could not get to their wealthy place, their place of abundance, experiencing full freedom, because after being free from the house of bondage, they did not become attached to God in faith. They doubted him at every turn.
While leaving the earth, Jesus told his disciples that not only would they be able to heal the sick and cast out devils from the oppressed, but as many as believed in Him down the years, would likewise be qualified to give quit notices to Satan’s emissaries in the lives of people (Mark 16:15-20). He said as many as believed on him, who embrace him as the Truth, will be likewise equipped with his power in their lives, would walk in his victory over satanic influences; and also display his power to set people free from the house of bondage.
